Casting and screen mirroring on Xumo TV

  • Updated

Xumo TV supports both casting and screen mirroring, from select apps like Netflix, YouTube and Spotify, giving you flexible ways to enjoy content from your mobile devices or computers on the big screen. Whether you're streaming a video, sharing photos, or mirroring your entire screen, these features make it easy to connect and control your viewing experience.

What is casting?

Casting allows you to stream content from supported apps (like YouTube or Netflix) on your phone, tablet, or computer directly to your Xumo TV. Once casting is active, the content plays on your TV while you continue using your device for other tasks.

How to cast to Xumo TV

  1. Make sure your device and Xumo TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Open a supported app and tap the Cast icon.
  3. Select your Xumo TV from the list of available devices.
  4. The content will begin playing on your TV.

What is screen mirroring?

Screen mirroring displays your entire device screen on your Xumo TV. This is useful for showing presentations, browsing, or using apps that don’t support casting.

Note: You can only mirror or cast from one device to your TV at a time. If you are currently using Apple AirPlay® and want to switch to screen mirroring from an Android device, press the btn_home_2.pngbutton on your remote to close AirPlay®.

Troubleshooting problems with screen mirroring

If you're having trouble getting your screen mirroring feature to work, here are some troubleshooting steps to ensure a successful connection:

  • Ensure Wi-Fi is enabled on your secondary device (phone, tablet, etc.).
  • Move closer to the TV.
  • Minimize the number of active Wi-Fi devices nearby.
  • Ensure the TV is ON (you cannot initiate screen mirroring when the TV is OFF).

Why do I see a black screen on my TV when playing video on my device while screen mirroring?

The black screen occurs when you attempt to mirror specific video content from your device to your Xumo TV. This is due to a standard industry protocol called High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP). Understanding what HDCP is and how it interacts with the screen mirroring feature explains why the video is blocked.

What is HDCP?

It is a form of copy protection used by content providers (like streaming services) to prevent unauthorized duplication of their movies and shows.

The conflict:

The Screen Mirroring function on Xumo TV is not designed to support this HDCP encryption. When your TV tries to display the protected video, the system recognizes the missing security handshake and automatically blocks the image signal.

The result:

You see a black screen while the audio may continue to play, confirming the restriction is purely for the video component.

This limitation applies to many smart devices and platforms and is a measure to protect copyrighted material.

Can I start screen mirroring from a second device while another device is already screen mirroring?

No. If you're currently screen mirroring from one device to your TV and want to switch to another device, you'll need to stop the current mirroring session first. Here's how:

Step 1: Stop the current screen mirroring session:

You can do this in one of two ways:

  • Press the BackButton.png button on your TV remote.
  • Stop screen mirroring on the device that's currently connected.

Step 2: Start screen mirroring from the new device:

Once the current session is stopped, follow the same steps you used initially to connect your new device to the TV for screen mirroring.
